绘画是视觉艺术，潘天寿牢牢把握画面的强烈视觉效果，黄钟大吕，以强其骨。因而他着力经营构图中的反差对比、墨彩的黑白、线的纵横及屈伸之对比<ref name="吴冠中2008">{{cite book|author=吴冠中|title=放眼看人|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=6FNLAQAAIAAJ|year=2008|publisher=团结出版社}}</ref>。潘天寿主张"意境求静、气韵求动" ，从全局看，气脉就起了主要作用。画中气脉的布置，要有头有尾，不可散乱局促，而要变化贯通。气脉的生发，就像写文章，要有"起、承、转、合"一这就是所谓"开合"。开即开放，合是合拢。一是开头，一是收尾，中间有承转曲折<ref name="潘公凯1995">{{cite book|author=潘公凯|title=潘天寿绘画技法简析|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=qoURAQAAMAAJ|year=1995|publisher=中国美术学院出版社}}</ref>。
