1920年开始写作，1922年，与[[应修人]]、[[冯雪峰]]、[[汪静之]]结成[[湖畔诗社]]，编辑出版《[[湖畔]]》诗集，为中国第一个新诗社<ref>{{Cite book|title=浙江文化地图 第3册 人文化成 浙江名人文化|last=杨建新主编|first=|publisher=杭州：浙江摄影出版社|year=2011.12|isbn=978-7-5514-0019-0|location=|pages=144}}</ref>，后写小说，着有《雨点集》<ref>{{Cite book|title=中外微型诗鉴赏|last=蔡智敏|first=|publisher=南昌：二十一世纪出版社|year=2016.08|isbn=978-7-5568-1301-8|location=|pages=34}}</ref>。1927年加入中国共产党，1930年至1933年历任河南省立开封师范学校、河南大学讲师、教授<ref>{{Cite book|title=民国人物小传 第13册|last=黄韬，刘绍唐|first=|publisher=上海：上海三联书店|year=2016.07|isbn=978-7-5426-5572-1|location=|pages=362}}</ref>。1933年12月，任中共天津市委常委、宣传部长时被捕<ref>{{Cite book|title=河南大学百年人物志|last=刘卫东主编|first=|publisher=郑州：河南大学出版社|year=2012.08|isbn=978-7-5649-0858-4|location=|pages=322}}</ref>。
