华盛顿哥伦比亚特区是大多数[[美国联邦政府|美国联邦政府]]机关、与{{Link-en|驻美国外交机构列表|List of diplomatic missions in the United States|各国驻美大使馆}}的所在地，也是[[世界银行]]、[[国际货币基金]]、[[美洲国家组织]]等[[国际组织]]总部的所在地，并拥有为数众多的[[博物馆]]与[[古蹟|文化史蹟]]。   哥伦比亚特区是美国最富裕、财富高度集中的地区；该地区2015年的人均生产总值爲181,185美元，冠绝全球。
1776年[[美国独立]]时的首都是[[费城]]，之后因独立战争和国家新立而屡有变迁，到1785年开始纽约被定为美国的首都。1790年7月1日，国会通过《{{tsl|en|Residence Act|首都选址法}}》，决定将首都从[[纽约]]迁至[[波多马克河]]和[[安那考斯迪亚河]]汇合处附近；但完成正式[[迁都]]前先由费城为[[行都]]。
