1950年代末和1960年代的[[ 城市规划]] 故意鼓励发展商在温哥华的[[西端区 (温哥华)|西端区]]兴建多层住宅大厦，从而构成一个紧凑的[[ 城市]] 核心，亦有利于鼓励市民乘搭[[ 公共交通]] ，骑[[ 自行车]] 和步行。据2001年[[ 人口普查]] 所示，[[ 温哥华市中心]]半岛 的人口密度达每公顷121人（即每平方公里12,100人）。温市政府亦继续推动政策鼓励高密度发展。温哥华被称为“街坊城市”，而每个社区都有其独得性格和种族结构<ref>{{cite journal|author=Thomas R.
