馬利的國家名稱源於公元13至16世紀馬利帝國。
1958~1959年[[法屬蘇丹]]時期的旗幟是以[[法國]]三色旗為基礎，配上名為「Kanaga」的黑人。

現為[[聯合國]](UN)、[[世界貿易組織]](WTO)、[[世界衛生組織]](WHO)、[[國際貨幣基金組織]](IMF)、[[國際復興開發銀行]](IBRD)、[[非洲聯盟]](AU)、西非經濟共同體(ECOWAS)之成員。

[[聯合國安全理事會]]於2013年派遣維和部隊[[聯合國馬利多層面綜合穩定特派團]](MINUSMA)前往馬利北部維安。政府與北部武裝團體於2015年簽署了和平協議，緩解敵對狀態。
