第一至三批全国重点文物保护单位类别和第四至七批类别不统一，其中前三批分为革命遗址及革命纪念建筑物、石窟寺、古建筑及历史纪念建筑物、石刻及其他、古遗址、古墓葬等六类。从第四批开始，重新划分为古遗址、古墓葬、古建筑、石窟寺及石刻、近现代重要史迹及代表性建筑、其他等六类。在[[第三次全国文物普查]]的基础上，[[国家文物局]]以新分类为准，对前三批进行了统一归类（其中原“革命遗址及革命纪念建筑物”改为“近现代重要史迹及代表性建筑”，原“石窟寺”、“石刻及其他”大部分改为“石窟寺及石刻”，少数改为“其他”，原“古建筑及历史纪念建筑物”大部分改为“古建筑”，少数改为“近现代重要史迹及代表性建筑”），同时对第一至七批重新进行了统一编号。现按新分类统计如下：<ref name="batch8">{{cite web|url=http://cchicc.org.cn/col/col1640/|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20180116140321/http://cchicc.org.cn/col/col1640/|title=相关说明|archivedate=2018-01-16|accessdate=2017-04-15|author=|date=2013-08-07|publisher=国家文物局}}</ref>
