道格拉斯-休姆年幼時在蘇格蘭[[貝里克郡]][[科爾德斯特里姆]]的家族宅第[[夏塞爾府]]生活，後來在[[英格蘭]]的[[陸葛洛夫學校]]（Ludgrove School）就讀，畢業後升讀[[伊頓公學]]，再獲[[牛津大學]][[基督教堂學院]]取錄，主修[[現代歷史]]，不過成績並不突出，他於1925年畢業時僅取得[[文學學士]]三等學位。<ref name="INDE">{{cite news| title=OBITUARIES - LORD HOME OF THE HIRSEL | publisher=The Independent | date=1995年10月10日}}</ref><ref name="DNB">"Alexander Douglas-Home", ''Dictionary of National Biographies'', Oxford: OUP, 5th edition, 2004.</ref>
