波尔多靠近欧洲大西洋海岸，位于法国西南部，[[阿基坦]]地区北部。城市建在[[加龙河]]拐弯处，并被河流分为位于河东的右岸和位于河西的左岸两个部分。在历史上，左岸是比较发达的。流经波尔多的[[加龙河]]可供远洋巨轮通行。[[加龙河]]左岸地势低洼，通常是布满沼泽的平原。

波尔多是由[[凯尔特人]]于公元前300年左右建立的，称之为“Burdigala”。公元前60年，波尔多被[[罗马人]]统治。
因为与[[不列颠群岛]]和[[德国]]以及[[西印度群岛]]进行葡萄酒贸易，使18世纪成为波尔多的黄金期，许多市中心的建筑就是从那个时期开始修建的。[[维克多·雨果]]曾经这样称赞说：“将[[凡尔赛]]加上[[安特卫普]]就是波尔多（Prenez Versailles et mêlez-y Anvers, vous avez Bordeaux.）。”
法国政府在1870年战争、[[第一次世界大战]]和[[第二次世界大战]]期间撤往过波尔多。
波尔多是一个历史和艺术城市，有着法国最大的历史艺术保护区（150公顷）。而为了保护这里，在兴建TRAMWAY（有轨电车）时特别采用了地面供电系统。2007年6月28日，波尔多市被评为联合国教科文组织的世界文化遗产。
