當此美國正迅速沒落之際，許多人也許覺得奇怪，為什麼我們要研究基督教與美國文化之間的關係。事實上，正因為美國由強權衰落的速度是如此之快，基督教與美國文化的關聯就更值得仔細的探討。我們需要了解造成美國過去強盛和如今衰落的原因，唯有如此，我們才能理解現在並規劃將來。

當我們探討基督教與美國文化的關係時，可能犯兩種錯誤。第一是看輕了基督教的影響而完全誤解這個獨特國家的起源和隨後的強盛，第二是誇大了基督教的影響而無法探尋到美國現在問題的根源。我將儘量避免犯這兩種錯誤。

有許多原因促使我們思考美國的興盛與衰落，我僅列出其中一些原因:

-Americanhasplayedaprominentroleinmodernhistory.TheAmericanWarforIndependenceinfluencedtheFrenchRevolution(whichdifferedinimportantwaysfromit)andcountlessotherrevolutionsandwarsforindependence.TheDeclarationofindependencehasinspiredmillions.TheU.S.Constitutionistheoldestintheworldandthemostsuccessful(atleastuntilrecently).AmericanparticipationinbothWorldWarIandWorldWarIIbroughtvictorytotheAlliesandchangedthefaceofthemap.America-sconflictwiththecommunistblocdominatedworldpoliticsforfortyyears.

美國在世界近代史上扮演着舉足輕重的角色。美國獨立戰爭影響了法國大革命(雖然兩者在許多重要方面並不相同)，以及其它大大小小的革命和獨立戰爭。美國獨立宣言啟發了千千萬萬的人。美國憲法是世界上最早的憲法，也是到目前為止最成功的憲法。美國參與了第一次和第二次世界大戰，幫助同盟國贏得勝利，並改變世界版圖。美國與共產世界的對峙，更主宰了全球政治達四十年之久。

美國的生活型態，對其他國家也影響深遠。長久以來，美國人民享有世界上最高的生活水準。美國的自由空氣吸引了世界各地百萬計的移民，造就了美國成為歷史上最富於民族融合性的國家。美國在科技上的進步領先全球。美國的工商業一直執世界經濟之牛耳。美國的高等教育吸引了許多國家的優秀學生來此深造。即使在大英帝國解體後，英語仍躍升為今日的國際語言，這要歸因於美國在軍事上、經濟上、文化上的優勢，以及透過美國的宣教工作的傳播(但這方面的影響常被忽視)。

-Negatively,Americanentertainmentmediaovershadowthepopularcultureofmanynations.PopularAmericanmusicandmovieshavecontaminatedhundredsofmillionswithfalseideasofmaterialism,sexualimmorality,rebellionagainstauthority,andunrestrainedindividualism.Perhapsnonationinhistoryhashadsuchanevilinfluenceontheentireglobeatonetime.Athome,Americansareguiltyofahighrateofviolence,oneofthehighestdivorcerates,agreatnumberofabortions,thelowestacademicachievement,andthehighestlevelofdebtofanyadvancednation.NowonderChinesegovernmentsfear"spiritualpollution"fromAmericaninfluencesandIslamicleaderscallAmerica"thegreatSatan."

負面的來說，美國的娛樂媒體掩蓋了許多國家的大眾文化。美國的流行音樂和電影充斥了無數的物質主義、性泛濫、反抗權威、以及過度的個人主義的錯誤觀念。大概歷史上沒有任何一個國家像美國一樣，能同時對整個世界產生如此惡劣的影響。這些錯誤觀念在美國國內的影響，表現於隨處可見的高犯罪率、高離婚率、高墮胎率、低學習成就、以及先進國家中最嚴重的人民負債情況。無怪乎中國政府懼怕美國的「精神污染」，而伊斯蘭教的領袖們稱美國為「大撒旦」。

-Ontheotherhand,AmericahasbeeninfluencedbytheChristianreligionmorethananymajornationinrecenthistory.NotonlytheConstitutionandlaws,butalsothecultureasawhole,cameundertheswayofChristianideasandvaluestoadegreeperhapsunprecedentedinworldhistory.OntheNorthAmericancontinent,manyChristianscarriedoutanexperimenttoseewhetheratryChristiannationcouldbeforgedoutofthewilderness.

另一方面，美國受基督教的影響，超過了近代歷史上任何一個大國。基督教的思想和價值觀影響所及，不僅在憲法和一般法上，也在整體文化之中，其影響程度是史無前例的。在北美新大陸上，許多的基督徒建立一個基督教國家，看她是否能在曠野中生存下來。

美國對中國及中國文化有極大的影響。自從十九世紀美國宣教士和商人到中國以來，美國人和中國人對彼此的生活影響甚巨。美國基督教也藉此影響了中國社會。到今天，許多中國人移民到美國，或是到美國讀書，其它一些中國人把美國看作一個「美麗的國家」，而且希望中國能在某些方面模仿美國文化。在此同時，美國的大眾文化如我們所見的污染了中國的道德文化。更糟的是美國的反中情緒，和中國的反美情結的滋長。我們怎麼樣理解這個複雜的中美關係.

要了解美國強盛與衰敗之間的矛盾，我們就必須追溯基督教與美國文化間的關係。

Whatis"Christianity"？基督教(Christianity)是什麼？

Theword"Christianity"hasseveralmeaningswhichmustbecarefullydistinguishedfromeachother.

「基督教」一詞，有好幾個意義，我們必須謹慎地加以區別。

InChinese,forexample,"Christianity"(JiDuZhao)referstotheProtestantchurchinitsmanymanifestations.RomanCatholicismiscalledTianJuChao(ReligionoftheHeavenlyLord,theCatholicnameforGodinChinese.)InEnglish,however,ChristianityreferstoallbranchesoftheChristianChurch,includingRomanCatholic,Easternorthodox,andprotestant(whichincludesPentecostal)churches.

譬如說，基督教在中文里不同於天主教，所指的是宗教改革後的新教派。但在英文裡，基督教指的是所有敬拜基督耶穌的教派，包括羅馬天主教、東正教、以及宗教改革後的新教派(也包括五旬節派)。

"Christianity"mayrefertoavisibleorganizationlikeachurchortothesystemofbeliefsheldbythosechurches.

「基督教」也可能指的是如同教會一樣的組織，或是這些組織所持的信仰。

類似的情況，「基督徒」可以指信奉基督耶穌的人，或上教堂的人(不論其信仰的程度)，或是一個生在基督教家庭也許嬰孩時就受洗的人，以這樣的稱呼有別於回**或是印度**。

而「基督教國家」，則可能指的是以基督教為國教的國家，如英國和德國，也可能指有許多基督徒居住的國家，如美國，用以區別於其它宗教國家，如印度是一個印度教國家。(但印度的回**也多過於其它國家)

即使在改革派基督徒中，「基督徒」可能指的是相信聖經的福音派，或是不相信聖經的自由派(新派)。一個「基督徒」，也許只是上教堂的人，也可能是一個認罪悔改、相信基督的救贖，藉聖靈的力量重生的人。後者正是福音派對「基督徒」所下的定義。

WhyhaveIspentsomuchtimetryingtorefineourunderstandingofthewords"Christianity"and"Christian"？BecauseconfusionoverthesewordsgreatlymisleadsanyonewhowouldseektocomprehendtherelationshipofChristianitytoAmericanculture.PartofthepurposeofthisbookistoshowhowdifferenttypesofChristianityhavehaddifferentimpactsuponAmericanculture.

我為什麼花這麼多力氣來釐清「基督教」和「基督徒」的意義？因為對這些名詞的混淆會嚴重誤導我們對基督教和美國文化之間的關係的理解。本書的目的之一，就是說明不同的基督教思想如何在美國文化上造成不同影響。

這本書並非以學術性的方式來討論基督教與美國文化間的複雜關係。我不是美國歷史與宗教的專家，我是以一個最近才研究了這個問題的普通美國人的身份來寫這本書。

Ontheotherhand,IhavebeenintenselyinterestedinAmericanpolitics,culture,andforeignpolicyformostofmylife.AsaChristian,Ihaveponderedtheinfluence-orlackthereof-oftheChristianfaithuponmynativeland.RelatingtoChineseoverthepasttwentyyearshasgivenmeadifferentperspectivefromtheoneIlearnedasayouth.Forexample,IhavebenefitedmuchfromreadingtheAnalectsofConfuciusandseeingtheimpactofConfucianismuponChinesecultureeventoday.TravelingtoIndia,Europe,andAfricahasopenedmyeyestoyetotherreligionsandcultures.MyPh.D.studiesinGreekandRomancivilizationshedsomelightontheroleoftheclassicalidealintheformationofearlyAmericaandthegrowingpowerofclassicalhumanism(andpaganism)inAmericatoday.Likewise,researchonAugustinecausedmetoevaluatehowtheearlyChristianssoughttotransformtheRomanEmpire.(Cochrane-sChristianityandClassicalCulturedetailstheirsuccessesandfailures,drawingimplicationsforourowntime.)

然而，我一直對美國的政治、文化、及外交政策有濃厚的興趣。作為一個美國的基督徒，我一直思索着基督教信仰，或者這信仰的缺乏，所帶給這塊土地的影響。過去二十年來與中國人的接觸，使我學習到與我年輕時所學的不同的看法。例如，研讀孔子的論語並親眼見到儒家思想對古今中國文化的深遠影響，使我獲益良多。我的印度、歐洲、及非洲之旅，打開我的眼界，讓我認識了別的宗教與文化。我對希臘羅馬文明的博士班研究，使我對美國建國初期的古典理想以及現在方興未艾的古典人文主義和古典異教主義都能有了解。同樣的，我博士論文對奧古斯丁的研究，促使我對早期基督徒如何改造羅馬帝國作了一番評價。(Cochrane在「基督教與古典文化」一書中對早期基督徒的成功與失敗有詳細的描述，值得作為我們這個時代的借鏡)

AlthoughAugustine-sCityofGodprovidedtheinspirationforthiswork,therecanbeofcoursenocomparisonbetweenthegreatAfricantheologian-smagnumopusandmyfeebleattempt.Ionlymentionhimtogivecreditfortheoriginoftheideaformyshorteressayincriticalinterpretationofculture.

儘管奧古斯丁的「上帝之城」是本書的靈感來源，我這本微不足道的書卻無法與偉大的非洲神學家奧古斯丁的堂皇鉅着相提並論。這裡提到他，是要將本書中對文化的批判性思考的最初想法歸功於他。

如果你想從本書中找到另一項立論，以證明美國是神所揀選的基督教國家，你將會失望。我試圖以基督徒的觀點，對美國歷史作批判性的描述與詮釋，而我所獲致的結論，卻與我一開始的假設很不相同，我的假設正是：美國是神所揀選的基督教國家。愛國的同胞們，請耐心的看完本書。真正愛美國的人，不會否認基督徒和基督教對我們國家的偉大貢獻，也不會否認我們信仰上的偏差所造成的錯誤與失敗。

基於以上的說明，我所希望達成的目標，是簡要地檢視那些自從英國殖民者來到新大陸後，基督教和美國文化之間相互影響的層面。部份內容會側重於政治，部份內容則會探討到文化的其它層面，如各種不同的宗教信仰、家庭生活、教育、工作、及藝術。就連外交政策也在討論之列，因為基督教的信仰常常成為美國與其它國家交往的原則，或至少是許多政治人物常運用的口號。整體來說，對基督教信仰的檢視，將優先於對美國社會其它的方面的探討。原因在於，如美國作家兼英文教授理察維爾(RichardWeaver)所寫道:「思想必定產生結果」。

事實上，思想對一個國家的塑造力量，正是本書的中心題目。我的目標是，讚揚基督教信仰是個人及整個國家那種終生奉獻的觀念之本源，美國今天已偏離建國時理想很遠，但這並非否定基督教信仰的貢獻；相反的，我希望能指出，美國的歷史驗證了其基督徒祖先所信奉的基督教真理。
