人物經歷
1978年至1982年，就讀於北京大學西語系英語專業，獲學士學位。
1982年至1987年，赴英國愛丁堡大學英語語言文學專業留學，獲博士學位。
1987.12-1989.8 北京大學英語系講師。
1989.8-1992.8 北京大學英語系副教授。

2016年4月14日，北京大學召開學部主任座談會和人文學部、信息與工程科學部、理學部換屆會。 曾任九三學社第十、十一屆中央委員會委員。第九屆,第十屆，第十一屆全國人大代表，北京市第十、十一、十二屆人大常委。第八屆全國青聯委員，第九屆全國青聯常委。
2016年4月14日，北京大學召開學部主任座談會和人文學部、信息與工程科學部、理學部換屆會。14日上午，林建華校長與各學部現任及往屆主任、副主任進行座談，聽取關於學部建設發展的意見。座談會後，人文學部、信息與工程科學部、理學部換屆會分別召開，校領導、各學部新老班子成員、相關院系及職能部門負責人參加會議。會上，林建華向上一屆主任班子頒發感謝函，並向新一屆主任班子頒發聘書，聘任申丹為人文學部主任，閻步克、張旭東、李四龍為人文學部副主任;聘任高文為信息與工程科學部主任，張遠航、任秋實為信息與工程科學部副主任;聘任饒毅為理學部主任，方精雲、吳凱、沈波為理學部副主任。上一屆主任班子成員對學部建設調整表示大力支持，對各學部發展提出殷切希望。新一屆主任班子成員表達了將不負眾望做好學部工作的決心和信心。[2] 2018年5月2日，中共中央總書記、國家主席、中央軍委主席習近平來到北京大學考察。考察期間，習近平看望鄧小南、王緝思、林毅夫、錢乘旦、申丹、杜維明、安樂哲等資深老教授，並同他們親切交談。
